Grannies without borders…

It’s been a very busy couple of weeks here and I was so convinced I was behind or had missed the Oh Granny! deadline that when I was finally home for a day yesterday I quilted what I’ve done so far of my Oh Granny! quilt as fast as I could.

This, you may remember, is basically all the yellow I have and it’s too small to be useful (about 47”) so I still need to add some kind of borders and binding but, when I checked, I discovered I wasn’t behind after all so I might get it finished in time…

We have still had no rain and, with a further succession of high 20s and 30°+ days and a hosepipe ban, keeping the garden alive in the hope that that things will pick up soon has been very time consuming.

By a miracle, the sunflowers flowered in time for My son # 3’s wedding and the wedding was wonderful. The reception was at a farm/glamping site and we all camped for a night, which was fun.

After that, my daughter # 2 and granddaughter # 4 stayed for the rest of week, then we went to my mother’s and I went in a hot air balloon with my son # 2, who had given the balloon flight to me as a birthday present. We were joined by my daughter in law # 1 and it really was an amazing and quite surreal experience just floating gently around! I hope to show more photos soon but these ones show how parched and dry everything is…

After the balloon and another day at my mother’s, Mr RH and I drove our daughter # 2 and granddaughter # 3 home to Sheffield (about 200 miles away) and we finally came home on Sunday to find that, incredibly, everything in the greenhouse (which I’d left in a random assortment of old bowls and tubs of water) had survived. I wished I’d thought of the bowls of water earlier in the season!

The forecasters, who are not to be relied on, say we will have rain tomorrow but we will have to see…

Now I am temporarily caught up with things here, I must catch up with the goings on in Quilt World :)

(If you subscribe to my blog by email, firstly, thank you :) Secondly, I really recommend you view the web version because otherwise you end up with a random scramble of photos and I don’t know how to stop that happening).

Your granny squares with all that yellow is such a burst of summer sunshine! I hope the rain does fall and that enough of it falls to make a difference!

Hi Janine, what a gorgeous quilt – and those pictures surrounded by sunflowers are stunning. I’ve never gone in a balloon ride but it’s on my bucket list :-) I’m glad that the wedding and the visits went well. Take care.

There’s no deadline for the Grannies — so you are right on time! I love the bright yellow and of course, the picture of it waving in the breeze on the clothesline is lovely. Happy news about your wedding! Congratulations to the groom and bride and parents, and to the sunflowers who showed up on time. Love the balloon ride photos: I’m very aware of how little rain and how much heat you’ve had this year, and hope that soon it starts to rain. We’ll be in London in two weeks — can’t wait!

I love your Grannies, Janine! It sounds like you’ve had quite the adventure since I last heard from you. Congrats to the bride and groom and so happy the sunflowers worked out ok. Thanks for sharing the balloon ride photos. I bet it’s fun, but not sure I would like that! I don’t care for flying at all! I hope you get the rain you all need.
