SAHRR 2025 – Month 17!

Another round in the curious saga of the Stay-At-Home-Round-Robin that was meant to be wall hanging but was was determined to grow into a bed sized quilt…

Welcome (for a pleasant change) to a post of joy and contentment in the world of Rainbow Hare :)

Next month, my youngest son is getting married and this weekend was his stag do (possibly known by some of you as a bachelor party) so Mr RH went off for the weekend and I, being left home alone, decided to have a little sewing retreat all by myself!

I was tempted to press on with the O Granny blocks but it has been so hot here for the last week (in the high 30s C or around 100F inside and out), that the incessant ironing was unthinkable and I wanted to do something that would benefit more from having a solid block of time devoted to it so I decided to put an extension on the 2025 SAHRR.

I wanted a blue and yellow border, separated by a curvy line and, when you look at it, it seems surprising that it took so long but the inner quilt was 56” x 48”, which didn’t readily lend itself to creating a nice even curves and I was reminded of the old joke- If I’d wanted to get there, I’d have started somewhere else. After a LOT of trial, error and the lid of a bread bin, I finally got a shape within striking of what I was hoping for but, if I were designing a whole quilt from scratch, I would definitely go for a square or a rectangle proportioned to give a nicer wave. Thank goodness for Frixion pens!

To avoid having to attempt sewing curves I marked the curve on the blue, laid the yellow under, sewed over the line and cut the blue and yellow away near the stitching.

Then I layered in some wadding butting up against the centre (which was already quilted) and made some green bias binding, which is now pinned over the raw edge of the stitched curve and waiting to be sewn down.

Although in the photo it looks like something that could have been quickly and easily accomplished (which, perhaps it might have been if it weren’t six feet long) I’m feeling like it’s a Ta-da moment and I’m looking forward to embellishing this new section now.

Happy Sewing!
