Today is the last Endeavourers reveal this year and our theme, this time, was ‘Sashiko’.

I haven’t ever attempted sashiko before but I bought a cheap set of stencils and (using a frixon pen to mark the stitches) I tried it out on the SAHRR quilt.

I know a lot of quilters and artists give interesting descriptions of their process but, try as I might, I find trying to plan or present a rationale for these things falls by the wayside as soon as I get started and I end up just doing whatever comes into my head and making it up as I go along!
I quite liked the effect but I still had no idea what to make so, with time pressing, I made a small (9 1/2″ square) flower-ish sort of shape using silk on a background of Moda Grunge and tried to create the effect of the stitching holding down the patches of silk.
Then I thought I would try using up some more of the scraps, which had already been fused, and after trialling a a few arrangements, it occurred to me that my original piece could be a letter ‘O’ and I could make some other abstract letters.

The second letter I made was the ‘L’ and I decided on making a collection to spell out colour because the fabrics are very colourful and I wanted a word that included a ‘C’ and and ‘L’!
I used Moda Grunge for all the backgrounds, fused silk for the letters (except the appliqued centre of one of the ‘Os’) and skeins of anchor embroidery thread for the stitching. I’ve put progress photos in the slideshow and I finished the quilts by bagging them and outlining the squares with threaded running stitch.
I thought about making these into a book and, maybe I can do that one day if I make some more to go with them, but, for now, I decided to finish them as individual squares and I think I will make them into a garland…

For today, though, time has caught up with me so we are having a washing line picture :)

I hope you will visit The Endeavourers and see what everyone else has made for this challenge.

Happy November!

(If you subscribe to my blog by email, firstly, thank you :) Secondly, I really recommend you view the web version because otherwise you end up with a random scramble of photos and I don’t know how to stop that happening).

I’d make a garland with them and hang them in my quilt room! These are so fun, and it just goes to show that scraps should be kept. You never know when they will come in handy!

This is fantastic! I think it strikes a perfect balance between unity and variety. It belongs on the cover of a magazine!

These are so beautiful! Love them. You could just leave them as is and display them in your Makery as a collection of small wall quilts too.

I think your contribution worked out smashingly, if that is a word. I love all the bits and parts that make this a whole, and how it pushed you to keep going in the creating. I really really like that “O” block, complete with the circular stitching. And tell me about the placemat? The cityscape full of dots? Was that one of yours, too? Congratulations on another Endeavourer success!

Hi Janine, what a gorgeous finish! I love how one block morphed into a whole series to spell the word Colour. You have used the Sashiko stitching and fabric scraps in such an innovative manner! Congratulations on a terrific finish and thanks for linking up to FM Mavericks!
