Time to be makerly again…

Every year we end up starting some big project or other and I think to myself, ‘Once this is done, I will get back to my true vocation of making things and finishing the Granny Square stories and improving my Etsy shop…’

But then something or other intervenes.

The Makery gathers dust, my blog lies abandoned, the days go by and my resolutions to be makerly again fall by the wayside.

And so it was that a week last Monday – the day I was (again!) resolved to get started – I ended up helping my son the builder (who is currently making us a new drive and converting our garage into an annex) with coping stones and such like. This time, though, I was so determined that I painted two frames and in the evening I found some wool for a Christmas stocking and a tin of scraps from Moon over Squircle and I started making something which might be quilt or a book or a garland…

I’m not a big namer of sewing accessories but my little scissors are called Gloria. She has a tendency to disappear for long times but, when I find her, I always feel she brings good luck and my project will fare well!

That Tuesday I cleaned and painted the Makery table (which was looking particularly shabby) to try to brighten up the room. I used the pink left over from the Cardboard Castle last year but it was really too pale so I decided to start on a pair of curtains for our bedroom using some teal velvet I bought on ebay last December.

On Wednesday I ordered some blue paint (and a brighter pink paint because you never know…) and I finally started making the two pairs of curtains. Then, on Thursday the paint arrived. I had child care duties in the afternoon but I painted one coat of the pink in the evening. The name of this paint is My Husband Said No and Mr RH might well have done just that, had he been consulted, but I’ve learnt over the years that these things are better just presented as a fait accompli.

Then, on Friday, after an early morning second coat of paint, we went Sheffield to visit my younger daughter for a few days.

Since we got back, I have been rearranging furniture. Drawers have gone upstairs from the hall in order to bring a large set down to replace a kitchen table in the Makery. A shelf has gone out and some plastic boxes of model making paraphernalia have found a secret home in the laundry room.

We still have some straightening out to do but it’s starting to look a lot better and a lot more like a space for making things, rather than junk shop.

In case you are wondering about the geese in the photos, they are everywhere! They’ve been an amazing sight flying back and forth over us lately. Sometimes they fly so low you can hear their wings beating. I don’t know whether they are massing to migrate or staying for the Winter but it’s lovely to see them. We’ve never had anything remotely like this number before!

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend :)

(If you subscribe to my blog by email, firstly, thank you :) Secondly, I really recommend you view the web version because otherwise you end up with a random scramble of photos and I don’t know how to stop that happening).

Oh, to be able to hear those geese flying overhead! What a wonderful sound they must make. And like them you are migrating from task to task and trying to get ready to tuck in for the winter. The little house is the best, and I laughed at the name of the pink paint. I love hearing about your life and your gardens and projects, so thank you!

I get that way too where I am determined to do something..anything to get back to making again. I am looking forward to seeing more of your circle project. Love the colors. I loved seeing the before and after photos of the Makery and the castle again! I have never seen that many geese together. How intriguing. It is always great to see Fiona! Such an expressive cat face.
