Wool on Sundays – 99 (one little chicken)

Welcome to Wool on Sundays :)
This week we went to help my youngest daughter, who is a medical student, move from Scarborough to Hull, which involved driving all day on Thursday (about 400 miles including a detour to leave our dog at my Mum’s house). And on the way back we stayed over night in Leamington Spa, a very beautiful town with stunning Regency Architecture. Unfortunately, we saw nothing during daylight hours except the motorway! Also unfortunately, I got some sort of a cold before we went and lost my voice so extremely that for the past four days I have been literally unable to say a word intelligibly. In my head I think it’s got better but then I open my mouth and only the faintest whispery squeak comes out :(
I did take some yarn with me but I didn’t end up doing anything with it so my only wool finish, this week, was one little chicken, made with some scraps of wool felt.

 

I’m very pleased with this little chicken, though, because I made the pattern in Turbo Cad and when I sewed it up it all went together perfectly. After Christmas I found a copy of Turbo Cad for Mac at a bargain price (less than £10 including postage) from a seller on Amazon. I have long lamented not being able to find any affordable drawing software to make patterns (since I switched to a mac several years ago) and I was unsure about Turbo Cad but at that price I decided to risk it. When it arrived I had no idea where to begin but a couple of weeks ago one of my sons, who is an architect, gave me a crash course. I have been experimenting with it in spare moments (and crashing it a lot) and this chicken is the first thing I’ve actually designed and sewn using it. I had planned to put the pattern in my etsy shop but it’s 3″ high and when I came to sew it I thought it was really too fiddly so I have now simplified the pattern but not yet made a sample or a photo tute to go with it. Being able to make my own patterns now is very exciting so I’m going to link this post with Fiona at Celtic Thistle Stitches for New to Me in 2016

    What a pity you didn't get to see the lovely architecture at Leamington Spa. 'Tis exciting to be able to draft your own patterns. That software sounds fantastic.

    Janine congratulations on the pattern drafting – that's quite an accomplishment, and a most impressive New to You feat! Your chicken is adorable :) If I need things drawn I ask a friend or search online – I can't even draw stick figures :D
