Wool on Sundays – 6 (socking and frogging)

Welcome to the first Wool on Sundays of 2014. I’m hoping this will be a good year for yarn!

At last I’m able to show pics of these secret Christmas socks. I used this free pattern from Garn Studio and Drops Karisma as suggested. I’m probably the last person in the world to have discovered  Garn Studio but, if you happen not to be familiar with it, I’d really recommend a visit. It’s an amazing resource and I love the variety of designs – especially all two coloured socks with stripy feet! I was hoping to make a pair for everyone I know but I think I’ll have to start now and make them gradually through the year for next Christmas.
My other main knitting accomplishment has been frogging!
No really!
I wanted to start a simple knitting project to work on over Christmas because my sewing machine had to be relocated from the dining table and, unless the pattern is complicated and needs a lot of attention, knitting seems more sociable than sewing. So I thought I’d make a cardigan inspired by this shawl. I checked out the coloured yarn and bought exactly the same type in exactly the same colourway but, whereas the shawl looks to have lovely clear colours, mine skein started off with a section of brown.

For a long time, I knitted on and on waiting to get to another colour, and reluctant to unpick because I’d done a fair amount already, but the brown just went on and on with me. And the yarn is 4 ply and the needles are 3mm and the longer it went on the more disheartened I became at the prospect of spending the next seventeen years knitting a cardigan I won’t even like. And, eventually, very late one night (apologies for the middle of night photos) when I was too tired to think very rationally and everyone else was asleep I decided to bite the bullet.

I took my trusty sewing scissors and a cup of tea and slowly, slowly cut through my knitting and, stitch by stitch I took out a strand of wool just above the ribbing. And by some miracle I managed to divide the piece into the ribbing and a striped section, which I’m thinking of turning into a scarf. I lost two rows and dropped no stitches but I don’t anticipate ever attempting frogging on that scale again! I am now frogging the brown sections from the yarn before I knit it and that’s much less traumatic :)

Finally, I thought I’d post a mosaic of my Autumn/Winter 2013 knits. This is pretty much all the knitting I’ve done this century – (in case that makes me sound really old – I’m 47, btw) – but, having been re-inspired by some wonderful pinterest projects and blogs, I’m hoping for a yarn filled future and looking forward to many more knitting/felting projects in 2014.

    It's very hard for me to get into knitting when the outside temperature is hovering around 26 – 29C in January. We are moving to a cooler place next week, so I am hoping to get a lot more knitting done next year.

    I LOVE those socks!!! Great job with the finishes, they are all beautiful :)

    You are not the last one to discover Garn Studio :) thank you for the suggestion great website. Beautiful sock are love the stripy feet so cute. That is one of my challenges this year: learn how to knit socks. You had great finishes in 2013 I'm looking forward to seeing your makes this year.
