MAKING CHRISTMAS – including whole season much muddled

Once upon a time, I used to be up way after midnight every Christmas Eve finishing rag dolls, sewing sequins on fairy dresses, stuffing soft toys…generally putting all those last little finishing touches to sewing projects destined to be presents for Christmas morning.

In recent years, after a last minute scrabble around I whip up some Stockings to replace the ones that have got lost since last year and that’s about it. Whilst I’ve no special objection to buying presents I can’t help feeling that something of the spirit has gone out of it – something of the specialness of giving something I’ve put care and thought and time into.

This year I am determined to (at least partially) reclaim the handmade Christmas. I am making a list of things I hope to make in time for Christmas. If I manage to complete it I’ll add what else I’ve made to the list as I go along!

I will report back with my weekly progress on Mondays and do a final post with a mosaic of everything on 9th January (to get clear of the holiday weeks).

I have a wonderful button very kindly made for me by my friend Lucy at Charm About you  so please take it with you and come back to visit on Mondays and we can encourage each other and catch up with how we’re getting on. Please also go and visit Lucy She really is a star!

Edited to add: Following Rebbeca Lynne’s Comment (below) I think I have worked out how to do a linky so, hopefully, you”ll be able to link up. I am starting to feel like a ‘real’ blogger now!

Happy Sewing :)

Welcome to Week 2 of MAKING CHRISTMAS

And a big thank you to everyone who linked up and/or left comments last week! I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s plans evolve into sewn objects.

I’m sorry to say that, this week, I can’t cross anything off my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas. I’ve started on the table runner though – or at least I’ve made a design and put together some fabrics – so I’ve put STARTED next to it on the list! I would have preferred to be crossing things off but STARTED is better than nothing and my secret partner seems to like it so that’s good.

So this is what my list is looking like now:

I can’t wait to see what everyone else has been doing. I hope you’ve all had a more productive week than I did! Remember you can link anything you want to get done in time for Christmas so it doesn’t need to be a present or decoration although, of course, if that’s what you’ve made, we’d love you share it.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to post this and put up the linky tomorrow morning (Monday) so I’m posting now (Sunday).

Happy Sewing :)

Welcome to Week 3 of MAKING CHRISTMAS

Apologies for posting this late today. Last night and this morning I had no internet connection for some reason but it seems to have resolved itself whilst I was at work.Thank you Lucy for linking up and to all who left comments or emailed last week! I hope you’ve all had a good sewing week.

I’m sorry to say that, this week, I again can’t cross anything off my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas so my list is still looking like this:

Welcome to Week  4 of MAKING CHRISTMAS

Thank you all for linking up and leaving comments last week!

I can’t believe it’s week 4 already. Having got off to a good start with finishing the hexie cushion and making the elephant apron, I’ve come to a bit of a standstill lately but I’m telling myself not to worry because it’s not (quite!) even November yet. Although I’m not progressing so well as I’d hoped, there’s still plenty of time left.

This week I’ve made a small decoration.

Unfortunately, the flash drained all the colour from the fabric. It actually looks quite bright and cheerful in real life. I’m wondering if my partner in the Table Runner Swap would like – I know she likes wonky trees :) – it but I’m going to try to get a photo in daylight to post to the flickr group so she can get a better idea of what it really looks like

For the time being, I’m going to put a ? against it so now my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas is looking like this:

MAKING CHRISTMAS WEEK 5

Welcome to Week  5 of MAKING CHRISTMAS

Thank you all for linking up and leaving comments last week!

This week I have something to cross off my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas – I’m sure everyone will know what it is!

I wanted to get a photo in daylight but, as you can see from this snap of the garden, today we are not having any daylight.

So, finished at last – the  Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap Table Runner

I’m also linking this up at Quilt Story for Fabric Tuesday – it’s not often I have a finish and I always find Quilt Story a great place for inspiration! Why not pop over to visit and check out the other projects that have been finished lately.     I have put an X against draft excluders because we are thinking of moving so I don’t want to spend and time and fabric on something that may not fit well in another house. I have also added Blue and Cream Quilt. You may remember one of my sons wanted a quilt so to celebrate finishing lots of small fiddly piecing, I decided to start something simple with big pieces! Although it’s on the list, if it’s not finished by Christmas, that won’t be a disaster.    So now my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas is looking like this: ~~~~~~~~~~~

MAKING CHRISTMAS LIST  PRESENTS:   2 x Sewing/Mending Kits 3 x Wall Hangings 1 x Apron + Kitchen Things Finish Bear (a UFO knitted from our own sheep wool)   HOUSEHOLD:  Finish Hexie Quilt (sofa throw and extra bedding when lots of people come) Floor Cushions (for TV room when lots of people come)  Draft Excluders (for when heat wave ends) X   SWAPS:   1 x Table Runner for secret partner in the Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap organised by Susan who blogs at Canadian Abroad. STARTED 1 or 2 x Christmas Ornament for secret partner in Susan’s Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap? It doesn’t need to be festive, although, of course it can be.   Happy Sewing :)

MAKING CHRISTMAS WEEK 6

Welcome to Week  6 of MAKING CHRISTMAS !

Thank you all for linking up and leaving comments last week!

I made a good start last week but I’ve just been away for three days so now I’m playing catch up again!

This week I have nothing to cross off my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas but I’ve made some progress on the quilt I started last week and I’ve got some cushions in progress. And I’ve put an X against Sewing/Mending Kits. I’ve decided the intended recipients would prefer Jewellery Rolls instead so I’ve added Jewellery Rolls to my Add Ons section. I think, by Christmas, I’ll have made quite a different list to the one I started with.

So now my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas is looking like this: ~~~~~~~~~~~

MAKING CHRISTMAS LIST  PRESENTS:   2 x Sewing/Mending Kits X 3 x Wall Hangings 1 x Apron + Kitchen Things Finish Bear (a UFO knitted from our own sheep wool)   HOUSEHOLD:  Finish Hexie Quilt (sofa throw and extra bedding when lots of people come) Floor Cushions (for TV room when lots of people come)  Draft Excluders (for when heat wave ends) X   SWAPS:   1 x Table Runner for secret partner in the Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap organised by Susan who blogs at Canadian Abroad. STARTED 1 or 2 x Christmas Ornament for secret partner in Susan’s Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap?  ADD ONS: Blue and Cream Quilt Cushions Jewellery Rolls   ~~~~~~~~~~~   I haven’t posted any pictures today because I’ve made no progress on my current projects since I showed them in last post :( So please link up  with your pictures! Remember you can link anything at all you want to get done in time for Christmas. It doesn’t need to be festive, although, of course it can be.   Happy Sewing :)

MAKING CHRISTMAS WEEK 9

Welcome to Week  9  of MAKING CHRISTMAS  and Thank You to everyone who joined in last week :)

Two weeks of Making Christmas left!   I haven’t finished as many things this week, although I’ve done quite a bit of sewing, off and on – none of it connected to my original list!   1. I’ve made some progress on the Blue and Cream Quilt this week – but I really must make this priority sewing now to get it finished.

2. I also made a Small Brown Hare which is going to count as a Christmas decoration until after Christmas when he can become a general decoration.

3. On Friday morning I came to my lap top to write a TTT  post to link up with Rebecca Lynne and I found I  had no internet connection. This happens quite a lot here, especially during the Winter, but it tends to resolve itself after a few hours. Then I received a completely surprising present – a Ruby Layer Cake (a very funny thing to happen as I had considered buying one and decided against it). So I started sewing and I sewed and sewed all day and all night until I had made this:

I think I’m going to call it ‘Ruby Butterfly’and have it as a sofa throw – What do you think? I think it might be a good project for some coloured hand quilting like inspired by Mary at Molly Flanders.   I never did get to writing that TTT post so I think I’ll save my thoughts for that to link up this week but do go and check out Rebecca Lynne’s blog – she’s made Christmas already and her her house is looking fabulous.

4. I also made a Dog Blanket for Lucy, which she is going to have either for Christmas or before if the weather turns really cold.

5. And finally, I made this with a strip left over from Lucy’s blanket (waste not:want not!):
I’m not quite sure where I’m going to put it yet but every Christmas I seem to be searching about for ribbon so I’m sure I can use it somewhere!

Now my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas is looking like this: ~~~~~~~~~~~

MAKING CHRISTMAS LIST PRESENTS:   2 x Sewing/Mending Kits X 3 x Wall Hangings 1 x Apron Kitchen Things Finish Bear (a UFO knitted from our own sheep wool)   HOUSEHOLD:  Finish Hexie Quilt (sofa throw and extra bedding when lots of people come) Floor Cushions (for TV room when lots of people come)  Draft Excluders (for when heat wave ends) X   SWAPS:   1 x Table Runner for secret partner in the Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap organised by Susan who blogs at Canadian Abroad. STARTED1 or 2 x Christmas Ornament for secret partner in Susan’s Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap ?  ADD ONS: Blue and Cream Quilt Cushions x 3 Jewellery Rolls Two Hanging BirdsPot holder x 2Oen gloves x 3Hare decorationDog BlanketSofa Throw‘Ribbon’  What have you been making this week? MAKING CHRISTMAS WEEK 10

Welcome to Making Christmas Week 10 and a big Thank You to everyone who joined in last week.

We’ll have the final Making Christmas next Monday and then, as I said in the first Making Christmas post, we’ll have a final posting with mosaics of everything we’ve linked on 9th January (to get clear of the holiday weeks). Be sure to come back then so we can have a grand finale and see how much we’ve all got done.

Back to this week, I’ve only got one finish but I’m happy with that because it’s a project that has very nearly gone into the bin on several occasions! For some reason, things have continually gone wrong with this quilt. I’ve miscalculated measurements, run out of fabrics, been stabbed by pins…I think it was very determined to become a UFO but I’m VERY pleased to say I have not been defeated. It is now very definitely a finished quilt and a Christmas present and, whilst it may not be perfect, it’s fit for purpose.

These photos aren’t great because we had to run out between rain storms and shelter from the wind – I’ll take some better ones when I get a chance.

I’ve put an X next to Wall Hangings because I had originally intended to make these for my three nieces but I decided, a while ago, that they were a bit too grown up for the design I’d had in mind. I’ve been thinking, off and on, about how I could adapt it but today I decided just to give them bought presents this year.   And now my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas is looking like this:

MAKING CHRISTMAS WEEK 11

Welcome to Making Christmas Week 11!

Firstly, I’d like to say Thank You to all of you who have linked up and/or commented these last 11 weeks. I really appreciate all your support and encouragement with my attempt to reinstate a, partly!, handmade Christmas and I’ve been really inspired by all the wonderful projects you’ve shared. This is, of course, the last Making Christmas for this year and lots of people have already left blogland for Christmas but if you’ve got any last minute finishes you want to link do join the party. This week I’ve just made some cushions and started to think about decorations.

I’ve also sent all my Christmas cards and bought presents!   I’ve put an X next to the bear and floor cushions because, although I haven’t ticked off everything I started with, this is much more than I’ve made for Christmas in years (and certainly more than I expected to accomplish when we started this back in October). I’m very happy with that and I’m not going to spend the next week feeling as if I should be making the bear and floor cushions!   Now my list of things I want to make in time for Christmas is looking like this:

MAKING CHRISTMAS LIST  PRESENTS:   2 x Sewing/Mending Kits X 3 x Wall Hangings X 1 x Apron Kitchen Things Finish Bear (a UFO knitted from our own sheep wool)X   HOUSEHOLD:  Finish Hexie Quilt (sofa throw and extra bedding when lots of people come) Floor Cushions (for TV room when lots of people come) X Draft Excluders (for when heat wave ends) X   SWAPS:   1 x Table Runner for secret partner in the Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap organised by Susan who blogs at Canadian Abroad. STARTED1 or 2 x Christmas Ornament for secret partner in Susan’s Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap ?  ADD ONS: Blue and Cream QuiltCushions x 3 Jewellery Rolls Two Hanging BirdsPot holder x 2Oen gloves x 3Hare decorationDog BlanketSofa Throw‘Ribbon’3 sofa cushions   Please link up with whatever you’ve been doing this week and remember to come back on 9th January (to get clear of the holiday weeks). As promised in my very first Making Christmas post, we’ll have a final linky party with a mosaics of everything we’ve linked to Making Christmas 2011 and a little celebration.

I’m linking this post to Rebecca Lynne as part of TTT (I’m behind on my thinking this week!)

And, finally I’ll just mention that I was lucky enough to ‘win’ a place in Katie’s Pay it Forward. This means, of course, that I’m also going to Pay it Forward At the moment, I only have two entries so if you’d like a little handmade gift from me during the next year hop over to my Pay it Forward Post and you can be the third :)

Wow! I'm hoping to make stocking stuffers, but not quilts this year. Good luck! I can't wait to see what you're creating. With your inspiration 2012 may be my handmade Christmas :)

I don't think I explained that well! I just meant I am hoping (in fact, determined before I start anything else) to finish the hexie quilt with a view to using it as a sofa throw and it can double up as extra bedding when we have extra children staying at Christmas :) No more quilts this year!
